Teeth Whitening at the Dentist: How It Works and What to Expect

Uncategorized

Teeth whitening is one of the most requested cosmetic dental treatments today. The promise of a brighter, whiter smile attracts people of all ages—and for good reason. A radiant smile can make a real difference in how we feel and how we present ourselves to others.

In this article, I’ll share everything you need to know about professional teeth whitening at the dentist’s office, based on my clinical experience here in Luxembourg. We’ll cover the different types of whitening, what to expect during and after the treatment, and who makes a good candidate.

What is professional teeth whitening?

Professional teeth whitening is a safe and effective dental procedure performed by a licensed dentist. It aims to lighten the natural colour of the teeth without damaging their structure. Unlike over-the-counter products, in-office whitening uses higher concentrations of bleaching agents, producing more visible and longer-lasting results.

At our dental practice, we use hydrogen peroxide or carbamide peroxide-based gels. These whitening agents work by oxidising the stains and pigments that accumulate in the enamel and dentin layers of the teeth. They are carefully applied to avoid contact with soft tissues such as gums and lips.

Common causes of tooth discoloration

It’s natural for teeth to darken over time. The most frequent causes of tooth discolouration include:

  • Frequent consumption of coffee, tea, red wine, and dark-coloured sodas;
  • Smoking;
  • Age-related enamel thinning and dentin exposure;
  • Prolonged use of certain medications;
  • Trauma or internal damage to the tooth;
  • Poor oral hygiene

It’s important to note that not all stains respond to whitening. In some cases, alternatives like dental veneers or crowns may be more appropriate.

Who is a good candidate for teeth whitening?

Teeth whitening is suitable for adults with good oral health and realistic expectations. Before starting any treatment, we carry out a detailed assessment to determine:

  • Whether there are any cavities, gum inflammation, or damaged restorations;
  • The current shade of your teeth and the expected result;
  • Any existing tooth sensitivity;
  • The type and depth of staining (surface vs. intrinsic).

This initial consultation ensures the procedure is safe and customised to your individual needs.

How does in-office whitening work?

The in-office whitening procedure is quick, safe, and usually completed in one session lasting about 60 to 90 minutes.

  1. Protecting the soft tissues: A protective gel is applied to the gums to shield them from the whitening agent.
  2. Application of the whitening gel: The gel is carefully applied to the teeth and may be activated with a special LED light or laser.
  3. Reapplication: The gel may be removed and reapplied 2–3 times during the session, depending on the product used.
  4. Final assessment: After the procedure, we compare the before-and-after shades and provide post-treatment instructions.

At-home whitening: what you need to know

In some cases, we recommend a take-home whitening kit with custom-made trays. This method helps maintain or enhance the result achieved in the dental practice.
The patient applies a lower-concentration gel inside the trays and wears them daily for 30 minutes to a few hours over a week or two. As always, following your dentist’s instructions is essential for safe, effective results.

Aftercare and maintenance

After whitening, the teeth become temporarily more porous and sensitive to staining. To prolong the results and avoid discomfort, we advise:

  • Avoiding foods and drinks with strong pigments (coffee, wine, sauces) for at least 48 hours;
  • Reducing acidic foods and beverages;
  • Not smoking;
  • Maintaining excellent oral hygiene;
  • Using toothpaste for sensitive teeth, if necessary;

These steps help ensure your newly whitened smile stays bright for as long as possible.

Results: what can you expect?

Results are visible immediately after treatment, though they can vary depending on the initial shade and individual response. On average, teeth can become 2 to 8 shades lighter.

Some patients with deep stains or discolouration due to medications may need additional sessions or alternative aesthetic treatments.

With proper care, the effects of teeth whitening can last between 1 to 3 years. Periodic maintenance treatments may help extend the results.

Teeth whitening: facts and myths

There are many myths surrounding teeth whitening. Let’s clear up a few:

  • Does whitening damage your teeth?
    No. When performed by a dental professional, whitening does not harm the structure of your teeth.
  • Are the results permanent?
    No. Over time, some re-staining is expected. However, maintaining good habits will help preserve the results.
  • Will all teeth whiten the same way?
    No. The whitening effect may differ between natural teeth, restorations, crowns, or root canal-treated teeth.
